Status Update: Children's Memorial Hospital

The new Children's Memorial Hospital in Streeterville (well, technically it's the Gold Coast, but SOAR's headquarters are a block away) is sprouting up faster than a toddler on Flintstone's vitamins.  Notice the setback matching the sculpture pavilion of the neighboring American Dental Association building at 211 East Chicago Avenue.

  1. It's definately Streeterville, not the Gold Coast. Check out SOAR for map, but basically Streeterville is from the River on the south to Lake Shore East on the north and from Lake Shore Drive to Michigan Ave.

  2. No, it's definitely Gold Coast. Streeterville ends at Grand Avenue. See the very useful blog entry from February called "How to Settle Chicago Neighborhood Fights."

As much as the NIMBYs at SOAR like to think they runs things, it's the city that decides where neighborhoods begin and end.

  3. No, it's definitely Streeterville. I live here. No one I've met has ever suggested that Northwestern Memorial and the Law School are in the Gold Coast. That map has to be a typo!

  4. I live here, too. I'm a block away from the new hospital. But if the city says it's Gold Coast, then it's Gold Coast.

Something I've noticed in my six years in Chicago is that most people have no idea where the neighborhood boundaries are. Especially when it comes to Lakeview and Wrigleyville. And the majority of South Siders I've worked with think the North Side starts at the river, not Madison Street. That's the reason I'm such a stickler for accurate boundaries, except for when it comes to the Loop.
