Orange You Glad You're Not Drinking It?

Autumn is here, and another one of Chicago's colorful aquatic traditions is underway.  It's not as dramatic or big or well-celebrated as the greening of the Chicago River, but the oranging of the Daley Plaza fountain is one method of keeping the seasons straight around here.

  1. It's orange? Oh. When I saw it tonight it concluded it was pink, in honor of the fight against breast cancer. I have been seeing all the pink lights around the city. Of course, my first thought was that it looked a bit like blood. Maybe someone was protesting something and instead of splattering blood somewhere had put fake blood in the fountain. Regardless it looks weird. Many probably think it is just bad maintenance.

  2. It made more sense when there would be Halloween events right behind it all day long throughout the month of October. There used to be a big haunted house and a pumpkin display, so in context the colored water fits in. But when it's the only thing in the plaza that's Halloweeny, it can look weird.

Unfortunately, there are only Halloween events at Daley Plaza from the 23rd through the 31st, and the number of events per day is fewer. Budget cuts, I'd assume.
